FREE MUMIA ABU-JAMAL COALITION, NYC
AIMS & PRINCIPLES

1. We believe that Mumia Abu-Jamal is innocent and should be released immediately.

2. We also believe that Mumia Abu-Jamal deserves the day in court which he has lackedso far; at the very least he is entitled to a new trial and a hearing of all the evidence in his case.

3. We also support campaigns against the abuses of the present social and political system which Mumia's case highlights: racism, the death penalty, the brutality of the police, and the unjust imprisoning of political activists.

4. To achieve these goals most effectively, we aim to build a democratic organization with collective work and equal power and responsibility among its members. While the Coalition is autonomous, we also recognize that Mumia makes the ultimate decisions in his case, including the selection of his lawyers. In this respect we take our lead from Mumia himself and his long-time political representative, International Concerned Friends and Family of Mumia Abu-Jamal.

5. We also recognize that people hold a variety of views on Mumia's case. We believe that anyone can join the Coalition provided that he or she understands that the U.S. criminal justice system has treated Mumia unfairly.

6. Finally, in order for the Coalition to function smoothly and democratically, we establish procedural rules for members. Among these is a rule against behind-your-back badmouthing. Members and their organizations are expected to discuss their differences openly.
