DEC 7: Hip Hop Teach In at Hostos Community College

LC the Poet joins Immortal Technique at Hostos Community College in the Bronx on December 7th.

The program on December 7 (1-4PM) at Hostos will consist of three segments:

  1. Introducing students to Mumia Abu-Jamal and his case through a video collage. During this segment we will also announce the “We Want Freedom” essay contest and scholarships (see below).
  2. Forum featuring Immortal Technique and LC the Poet centered on what motivates them to use art to advance issues of social justice — plus special performances by the artists!!!
  3. Engaging students on what they have learned and experienced that day, exploration of project possibilities led by students during the spring, free-writing exercise on social justice.

The “We Want Freedom” essay contest and scholarships

Created by the Campaign To Bring Mumia Home, in collaboration with The FLY Academy (Fierce Leadership for Youth) and the New York Free Mumia Abu-Jamal Coalition.

Over the next four months, FLY Academy students will read “We Want Freedom”, a book by political prisoner, Mumia Abu Jamal. They will then write an essay reflecting on what they have read under the guidance of radical educators and mentors. The students will help select three scholarship winners.

The program seeks to build an inspiring and joyful atmosphere linking art, literacy, and social justice for Bronx high school students; and building their capacity to navigate both the world and their place in it.

The event is free. We encourage radical educators and radical college students/mentors to attend. Please help spread the word.
